Escape to Kaputaş Beach: A Treasure on Türkiye's Mediterranean Coast

Escape to Kaputaş Beach: A Treasure on Türkiye's Mediterranean Coast

Kaputaş Beach is a must-visit destination when visiting Kalkan in Türkiye  It's an idyllic haven with picture-perfect turquoise water and golden sand, only a short drive away. This small but stunning beach is described as a ‘natural wonder’ and is often pictured in Türkiye's tourism advertisements, making it a favourite for both local visitors and holidaymakers.

Location and How to Get There

Kaputaş is around a 10-minute drive from the picturesque resort of Kalkan or 20 minutes by car from the appealing town of Kaş, situated on the main road between the two resorts.

The beach is uniquely located where a narrow canyon towered by steep cliffs and forests joins the sea. Because of this, Kaputaş is also known as ‘Canyon Mouth Beach’. The surrounding scenery makes this area a striking place to spend time in.

During the peak season, parking can be limited. To beat the crowds, it's advisable to get to Kaputaş early or take a serene sunset trip. Taxis are available, and local dolmuş are frequent as an alternative to driving.

What To Expect

There are around 180 steps descending down from the roadside to the golden, fine-grained sand and pebbled beach. The clean, crystal clear water displays pristine shades of turquoise, making it an amazing spot for sunbathing and swimming.

Although it may seem slightly challenging going back up, the view from the top and the benefit of the beach below make the endeavour completely worth it.

Visitors will find that the sea temperature is cooler here because of the spring water flowing in from the nearby mountains, and meeting the sea underground. The water doesn't take long to become deep, and due to the open coastline, it can be wavy at times.

There is a very small entry fee, with sunbeds and umbrellas available to rent in the peak season. Showers, toilets, and changing facilities, as well as a small beach cafe for light refreshments and ice cream, can also be found.

Best Time To Visit

Naturally, Kaputaş Beach can get busy during the summer months, but as it's relatively small in size and in a more secluded spot, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded. Visiting during the early morning or late afternoon/early evening is a perfect alternative.

If you’re looking for a more peaceful experience altogether, then May, June, or September are also wonderful times to visit, as the weather is still warm, the sun is plentiful, but the tourists are fewer.

Helpful Hints and Tips

Footwear: Beach or water shoes would be practical but they are not necessary. Comfortable shoes are ideal for the walk up and down the many steps.

Cash: Card machines or cash points are not always available at a remote location like Kaputaş. Bringing some cash (Turkish Lira) will guarantee your entry admission, ensure that you can rent sunbeds, and buy refreshments.

Sun: There's little natural shade at the beach, so be prepared by bringing extra suncream, a hat, sunglasses, and don't forget to drink plenty of water.
